League of Legends is a free online real time strategy (RTS)
game. It was created and published by Riot Games. If you
have ever played Defense of the Ancients or Aeon of
Strife, League of Legends is very similar to those games. League
of Legends has two gameplay modes: Classic and Dominion.
Classic is the more common style to play the game; Games of 6 or 10 players separated into even
teams for 3v3 or 5v5 games. Each player chooses 1 out of over 100 champions to play as. The goal
of the game is to destroy the other team's nexus, which resides on the opposite side of the map. To
get to the nexus, teams must fight through the other team's minions, turrets, and champions on
three paths called lanes. There are spots on the map called brush where champions standing inside
the brush are completely invisible to the enemy. This way they can set up "ganks" or ambushes on
enemy champions. There is also a jungle which holds neutral monsters that may contain buffs
which are given to the champion that slays that monster.
Dominion is played very similarly, but is focused on constantly maintaining battle. The map is
smaller, champions start off at level 3, gold is earned faster, respawn times are shorter, and the
objective is different. Instead of trying to destroy the enemy's nexus, each team tries to control
capture points. The team that is controlling 3 or more capture points will slowly drain power from
the enemy's nexus, and when that power reaches zero, the other team wins.
Summoners/Players, can join player vs. player (PvP) matches, or they can choose to fight
cooperatively against AI opponents. The PvP matches can be both Ranked or Casual. Ranked is
played significantly differently, having bans for champions and a different pattern to selecting
champions. For both modes, players can invite other summoners from their friend's list into games
or can be matched up with random players online.
Summoners will level up after playing enough games and thereby gaining enough experience.
Champions are the characters that players control in game. Players have to unlock the using BE or
RP to them, but Riot puts 10 champions on a free-week every week; these champions are free to play
for that week. Each champion has 5 abilities: one passive ability, three normal abilities, and one
ultimate ability. Champions start at level 1 and grow to level 18 through the course of the game; each
level increase their stats and allows them to upgrade one ability.
